How to Make Moringa Tea (Hot or Iced): A Simple Guide

Moringa tea is one of the easiest herbal teas to make at home. It's naturally caffeine-free, light and earthy, and takes about five minutes. Here's exactly how to brew it, plus a few ways to make it taste great.

What you need

  • 1 tsp (about 2 g) dried moringa leaves per cup
  • 8 oz (240 ml) of water
  • A tea infuser, strainer or French press
  • Optional: lemon, fresh ginger, mint or honey

How to make hot moringa tea

  1. Heat the water until it just starts to boil, then let it sit for about 30 seconds. Very hot but not boiling water keeps the flavor smooth.
  2. Add the leaves. Place 1 tsp of moringa leaves in your infuser or directly in the cup.
  3. Steep for 5 minutes, covered. Go shorter for a lighter cup, up to 7 minutes for a stronger one.
  4. Strain and enjoy. Add lemon, ginger or a little honey if you like.

How to make iced moringa tea

  1. Brew a double-strength cup: 2 tsp of leaves in 8 oz of hot water for 5 minutes.
  2. Strain and let it cool for 10 minutes.
  3. Pour over a glass full of ice. Add a squeeze of lime and a few mint leaves.

What does moringa tea taste like?

Moringa has a light, grassy, slightly earthy flavor, similar to a mellow green tea without the bitterness. If you're new to it, start with a shorter steep and add citrus.

Flavor pairings to try

  • Island morning: moringa + fresh ginger slice + honey
  • Bright and fresh: moringa + lemon + mint
  • Calm evening: moringa + a pinch of chamomile
  • Moringa latte: steep strong, then add warm oat or coconut milk

How much moringa tea should you drink?

Most people enjoy 1 to 2 cups a day. Start with one and see how you feel. If you are pregnant or nursing, or take medication for blood pressure, blood sugar or thyroid, check with your doctor first.

Moringa in the Caribbean tradition

Across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, moringa grows in backyards and is brewed as an everyday "bush tea." It's often called the "miracle tree" because nearly every part of it is used in traditional cooking. Brewing the leaves is the simplest way to bring that tradition into your routine.
